Battlefields, Paris and the Cote d'Azure |
Join
us as we explore France from top to bottom. We start in the north
investigating the World War Two battle sites where Canadian soldiers
and their allies landed on the beaches of northern France and eventually
pushed the Germans back and out of France. They are honoured here
with monuments and cemeteries for the many young Canadians who gave
their lives to allow France to achieve its freedom from the Nazis.
We
then spend time in Paris becoming familiar with the many famous
landmarks and the general ambience of Parisian culture in the springtime.
Next
we travel south to the French Riviera where we will explore the
medieval towns and city centres as well as the modern cultural offerings
of this very famous stretch of coast.
You
will return home with a very comprehensive knowledge of this famous
country and memories to last a lifetime!
Day
1: Depart Canada.
Day
2: Arrive
in Paris. We then travel by modern first class highway coach to
the town of Bretteville sur Laize where we will visit the Canadian
war cemetery, one of many in France where Canadian soldiers were
buried upon giving their lives to free France and Europe from the
grip of the Nazis. Our next stop is the town of Bayeux where we
will view its famous tapestry. This embroidery chronicles the Norman
conquest of England by William the Conqueror in 1066. The embroidery
is a valuable document of the history and the costumes of the time.
Tradition attributes it to Queen Matilda, wife of William the Conqueror,
and her handmaidens. Overnight Bayeux (B,L,D)
Day
3:
Today is spent touring the beaches where Canadian and Allied troops
came ashore in the battle to free France. We will visit the Arromanches
Museum and the Juno Beach Centre which document the Normandy landings.
Another of the many Canadian war cemeteries is Europe is located
nearby at Beny-sur Mer. We will stop here and pay our respect to
the young men of Canada buried here.

to overnight in Paris (B,D)
Day
4: We
awake in Paris, perhaps the worlds most famous city! We will
depart on a guided bus tour of the city today to give us an overview
of the main historical and tourist areas. Tomorrow we can then return
to some of them for further exploration. We will make stops also
at some of these sites during our tour today. (B,D)
Day
5: In
the morning we will take a walking tour of Champs-Elysees, lArc
de Triomphe, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Pompidou Centre.
In
the afternoon we will take a guided tour of the Louvre Museum which
you may have seen in many movies, more recently in The Da Vinci
Code. (B,D)
Day
6: Louis XIVs phenomenal palace outside of Paris in Versailles
is the subject of our tour today. You will be amazed at the beauty
and opulence displayed here, a testament to the power and wealth
of the pre-revolutionary royalty of France.

to Paris (B,D)
Day
7: Today we travel to the south of France, to the city of Nice.
We will travel on Frances famous TGV train which reaches speeds
in excess of 300 km an hour. Upon our arrival we will take a guided
walking tour of historic old Nice. (B,D)
Day
8: We spend our time today on a guided tour of the main cultural
and historical attractions of the Cote DAzure. We will visit
the city of Cannes and St. Paul de Vence, an historic hilltop village
as well as other towns in the area.
Return
to Nice. (B,D)
Day
9: One
of the smallest political regions in Europe is Monaco, ruled for
centuries by the Grimaldi family. Today we will take a guided tour
of Monaco and the city of Monte Carlo with a stop at the hill town
of Eze and a perfume factory on the Upper Corniche.
Return
to Nice via the Lower Corniche (B,D)
Day
10:
Today we return to Canada. We will transfer to the Nice airport
for the return flight to Ottawa with memories to last our lifetime.
