| Costa
Rica Student Itinerary: The Wild Frontier |
Take
your students to the pristine areas of Costa Rica that only we offer,
rather than the heavily travelled and touristed areas offered by
the large "cookie cutter" itineraries of the mega travel
companies. You will fall in love with this hidden paradise!
Day 1:
Arrive in Costa Rica. Pick up from the Airport and transfer to hotel
in San Jose.
Day
2:
Breakfast early and departure towards Poás Volcano National
Park. After spending a couple of hours in the park observing the
majestic steaming crater of the Poás Volcano and hiking to
Boto Lagoon, an old lake-filled crater of the Volcano, we will head
towards a beautiful destination that offers visitors the largest
butterfly farm in the world, an amazing hummingbird garden, and
a great system of trails in the cloud forest on the side of a rainforest
river. Great waterfalls can be admired as they flow down this rocky
canyon. At about 3 p.m. we will start heading towards the Talamanca
Mountains where we will stay for the next 2 nights. Dinner will
be upon arrival at the lodge (B,L,D)
Day
3:
Breakfast
at 6:15 a.m. in the morning. After breakfast, at 7:00 a.m. we will
begin exploring the wonders of this high mountain valley. First
we will seek out the Resplendent Quetzal, an extraordinary bird
of the cloud forests of Costa Rica, worshipped by the Mayans and
very rare in other parts of Central America and Costa Rica.. We
will then continue on an extraordinary loop which takes us into
the majestic Cloud Forest of this reserve where centenary oak trees
can be seen and where we will talk about the flora and fauna of
the site. We will come back to the lodge for lunch time and enjoy
a great meal there. In the afternoon we will take a hike to a waterfall
and river grotto hidden in the cloud forest. This hike takes place
along the side of a river, also surrounded by the cloud forest.
We will explore the river canyon until we finally reach a wonderful
place nestled in the deep forest. The waterfall plunges several
meters into a clear plunge pool surrounded by jungle. You can swim
in this pool of clear cold water while the waterfall froths up the
surrounding water. Return to the hotel for dinner at the hotel at
6:00 p.m. (B,L,D).
Day
4:
Breakfast
at 6:30 a.m. and departure towards the Pacific coast. Lunch will
be at our hotel upon arrival. In the afternoon visit a marine park
and enjoy the beach and great body surfing in the Pacific Ocean.
Dinner at the hotel at 6:30 p.m. The swimming pool can be enjoyed
at the hotel. (B,L,D)
Day 5:
Breakfast
at 7:15 a.m. and then we will depart towards Sierpe to catch the
boat to our rainforest lodge on the isolated Osa Peninsula. The
boat ride will take about 2 hours and you will have the chance to
enjoy the Sierpe River Mangroves. In these mangroves, we can observe
a lot of wildlife such as: boa constrictors, ospreys, mangrove black
hawks, monkeys, iguanas, sloths, and small shore birds and crabs,
making your time in the river very interesting. After a while on
the river we will arrive at the mouth of the river and then start
our ride on the Pacific Ocean. When we arrive at our beach-side
lodge nestled in the rainforest lunch will be served. The group
can then explore the rainforest edge setting, swim, or simply relax
on the beach. Dinner at 6:30 p.m. at the lodge after watching the
sun set in the Pacific Ocean and maybe catching the mysterious green
flash as it does. We can then go exploring on a rainforest night
activity. (B,L,D)
Day
6:
Early breakfast, at 6:30 a.m. At 8 a.m. departure by boat towards
Corcovado National Park. Lunch will be picnic style in San Pedrillo.
Afterwards we will visit a small tropical waterfall where you can
take a dip in its refreshing swimming hole. This is pristine first
growth Pacific Coast Rainforest, one of the few remaining stands
in the Americas. Within there are reptiles, birds and mammals of
every description. Perhaps you will see the Jesus Christ
lizard, so called because of its ability to walk on water. Return
by boat to our lodge for some beach or hammock time after your hike.
Dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. (B,L,D)
Day
7:
Breakfast at 6:30 a.m. At 8 a.m. departure for the Pacific Ocean
Dolphin Tour. Chances of running into a group of Pantropical Spotted
Dolphins, Bottle-nose Dolphins, or Spinner Dolphins are great. Other
wildlife includes Manta Rays, Sea Turtles, Humpback Whales, and
others. The tour will take approximately 4.5 hours. On a previous
trip we were amongst a pod of 1500 Spinner Dolphins, leaping and
spinning around our boats for almost an hour. They even allowed
us to stroke them as they swam beside our boats! We will then return
to our lodge for lunch and then have further opportunities to explore
the surroundings in small groups. Dinner at 6:30 p.m. (B,L,D)
Day
8:
Breakfast at 6:20 a.m. and then departure back to Sierpe. Upon arrival
at Sierpe we will take our bus to San José, stopping on the
way for lunch (not included). Arrive in San José and check-in
to our hotel and time to explore the surrounding neighbourhoods.
At 6:30 p.m. we will leave from the hotel to celebrate our farewell
dinner at a nice restaurant in San Jose. Return to Hotel. (B,D)
